About the Lecture:
As our cities and environments become more complex and face unprecedented challenges, it is no longer sufficient to design for aesthetics alone. The practice of urban design, landscape architecture, and planning now demands going beyond typical design services to support deeper insights via foresight, research, experimentation, and innovative advocacy. Learn how 60-year old, employee-owned firm SWA Group is addressing increasingly complex environmental, technical, and cultural issues through XL Lab, the firmwide research and innovation lab.
Anya Domlesky is an urban designer and landscape architect currently at SWA Group as Director of Research. She runs XL Lab, the firm’s innovation lab undertaking practice-based research. As a designer, she has worked largely on issues around urbanization, coasts, and water. Her research on the built environment focuses on scales beyond the designed site--examining processes of urban building and unbuilding, material ecologies, and infrastructure. Her research has been shown at both the Shenzhen and Venice Biennales. She has previously worked at the New York City Department of City Planning and Hood Design, lectured internationally, and taught at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and Boston Architectural College. She holds an MLA from Harvard University Graduate School of Design and an M.Arch II from McGill University.
